[Remote] Senior Engineering Manager, Data Platform
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Root Inc. is on a mission to unbreak insurance by creating experiences people love at prices they can’t believe. The Senior Engineering Manager will lead the Data Platform team, focusing on maintaining data pipelines and orchestrating data for advanced analytics and data science capabilities while partnering across business units to execute Root’s foundational data strategy.
Responsibilities
- Set the short and long term strategy for the Data Platform in partnership with Qualitative Science, Decision Science and Product
- Effectively manage the individuals on your team to ensure they are performing well in their role and as members of the team
- Use an appropriate mixture of coaching, directive feedback, and delegation to achieve business, team and individual goals
- Identify gaps in the team and develop plans to address those gaps via individual development, hiring, or partnership
- Proactively dive into code, design reviews, and technical challenges alongside your team when necessary, demonstrating a hands-on approach to problem-solving and leading by example to ensure high-quality software development and timely project delivery
- Work closely with the Engineering Leadership team to improve the effectiveness of the Engineering org as a whole
Skills
- 7+ years as a data engineer
- 5+ years as a people manager on engineering teams
- Experience with SQL, Python, Terraform, and AWS cloud infrastructure
- Experience building and maintaining OLAP systems and data platforms
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Proven leadership of projects involving multiple teams across functional domains
- Excellent communication skills both with engineering colleagues and senior business leaders
- Expertise in Cloud Architecture
