MN Winter Sports History Digital Map Intern

POSTING DATE: June 26, 2026 DEADLINE DATE: July 14, 2026 HOURS: This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately September 14, 2026 to May 31, 2027. A part-time intern must be available to work 15 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern’s school schedule and operational needs. DESCRIPTION: We are seeking an intern to support the research and development of a Minnesota Winter Sports and Hockey History Digital Map. This internship position will support research of primary and secondary sources, creation of a database of potential stories for publication, and outreach to potential partners and collaborators to collect stories from across the state. The internship position will primarily be supporting the Inclusion and Community Engagement Department whose focus is to establish and nurture trusting, mutually beneficial relationships with underrepresented communities across the state. We believe that community members are the leaders and producers and owners of their stories and their resources. Community engagement is building relationships in a way that honors that authorship, leadership, and ownership. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create strategies for increasing community participation in the Minnesota Winter Sports and Hockey History Digital Map project and reach out to potential community partners across Minnesota, with a primary focus on communities whose histories are underrepresented, including Indigenous and Native peoples, people of color, LGBTQIA+ community members and people with disabilities.
  • Work with various departments at MNHS to research and develop new content for the project; review story suggestions collected through our online form on a rolling basis to prioritize story publication.
  • Seek and acquire images for stories as needed.
  • Support social media manager to develop social media content to raise awareness of stories represented in the map and opportunities for communities to participate in the project.
  • Attend tabling and other engagement opportunities to promote story collection as needed.
  • Meet with MNHS staff and attend department meetings as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.
  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or a graduate with a degree in the following areas: History, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, Anthropology, Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia, Sociology, Ethnic Studies
  • Experience and/or training in research technique and best practices, and is comfortable working with primary sources.
  • Experience with digital storytelling is preferred, though not required.
  • Experience with ArcGIS StoryMaps is preferred, though not required.
  • Experience with community engagement and public participation projects.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends.
  • Must have access to a personal computer.

KNOWLEDGE INTERN IS EXPECTED TO GAIN:

  • Familiarity with MNHS resources.
  • Increased community engagement skills.
  • Research, writing, and editing, best practices and skills building.
  • Experience in a professional museum environment.

SEMINAR EVENTS: Interns are require to participate in three, in-person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work. Please ensure you are available for these dates when applying:
