Current County of Kaua'i employees, must apply on the Internal Career Site by clicking on this link Job Title: Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Salary Range: $9,750.00 - $11,776.00 Position Salary: Salary Commensurate with Experience Location: Office of the Prosecuting Attorney Civil Service or Non Civil Service: Non Civil Service Job Summary: The County of Kaua`i Prosecutor is seeking Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys to represent the People of Kaua`i County by prosecuting criminal actions in the District, Family and Circuit Courts of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, on the Island of Kaua`i. Examples of Duties: Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys generally begin their assignments in District Court, which calendars traffic, misdemeanor, petty misdemeanor and criminal violations, all trials in District Court are bench trials decided by a single judge. Thereafter, deputies are assigned to Family Court, which has dedicated calendar dates for domestic violence and juvenile cases. After spending approximately one to two years in these courts, a deputy may thereafter be assigned to Circuit Court work, which includes screening, charging and trying felony and misdemeanor committal cases, often before a jury. Training opportunities are provided for all deputies. These include but are not limited to trial advocacy and areas of specializations such as impaired driving, domestic violence, community prosecution, crimes against children, drugs investigations and drug court, asset forfeitures, violent crimes, elder abuse, career criminal prosecution and sexual assault. Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys are encouraged to be active in the state and local community bar associations, as well as other community groups. They may be requested to teach or speak to law enforcement and other groups about the criminal justice system. Although no trial experience is necessary, the ideal candidate will have experience in the prosecution of both jury and non-jury trials. Further, candidates should be capable of working independently, assessing cases, interviewing victims and witnesses, working with police officers, maintaining a current knowledge of criminal law, making court appearances, and working collaboratively with both attorney and non-attorney staff. The County of Kaua`i Prosecutor's Office has one office located in Lihue, directly across the street of the Kaua`i Judiciary Complex and requires a valid State of Hawai`i Bar License. For non-civil service positions, applicants do not need to meet minimum qualification requirements. Applicants for civil service positions who meets the minimum qualification requirements are placed on an eligible list which will be used by departments to fill a vacant position for that class of work. A civil service position must be filled through the merit system whereby applicants must be qualified to fill a position.
