Job Summary NexGen Technologies is seeking an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer (LLM / Agent) to support a federal modernization initiative incorporating large language models (LLMs) and AI driven agents as core system capabilities. This position performs advanced, nonmanual, computer related work involving the design, development, integration, and modification of AI enabled software components that support mission critical federal systems. The AI Engineer applies specialized knowledge of computer science, artificial intelligence, and software engineering to implement LLM based solutions and agent workflows integrating with backend services, APIs, and data systems. The role requires consistent exercise of creativity and independent judgment in determining technical approaches, integration patterns, and implementation details. Supervisory Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (as assigned)

  • Design, develop, and integrate LLM-based solutions and AI agents into backend systems.
  • Implement prompt engineering, orchestration logic, and agent workflows to support document centric and knowledge driven use cases.
  • Integrate AI services with RESTful APIs, backend services, and data sources.
  • Apply secure development practices and align implementations with federal security and compliance requirements.
  • Support testing, validation, and performance tuning of AI solutions.
  • Collaborate with backend developers, AI/ML platform leads, and security personnel to ensure consistent and compliant implementations.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation related to AI components and integration patterns.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of five years of experience in software engineering, AI engineering, or related technical roles.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or integrating AI enabled software solutions.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience integrating APIs.
  • Experience working in cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.
  • Strong understanding of secure coding and software engineering best practices.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with large language models (LLMs) and agent-based architectures.
  • Familiarity with Azure OpenAI or similar managed AI services.
  • Experience with retrieval augmented generation (RAG) or knowledge centric systems.
  • Prior experience supporting federal or other regulated environments.
  • Relevant AI, cloud, or software engineering certifications.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a regulated federal environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Must be able to pass background screening prior to employment.
  • U.S. Citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or U.S. work authorization with a minimum of three years of U.S. presence, as required for federal contracts.

Compensation: $105,000-130,000 per year (The successful candidate's starting pay will fall within the salary range provided and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, experience, qualifications, knowledge, skills, geographic work location, and market conditions.)
